Personal Statement about Training Program:
My psychotherapy experience suggests that Focusing training is likely to be most effective if it starts from the student's existing interpretive patterns of self-awareness rather than trying to teach it as a technique in the same way to everybody. There seems to be a process whereby people 'get it' as a whole, so to speak - and that's where a standardised training program can start from. Otherwise it can look like 'just another technique' and people can be disabled by fears about doing it 'right'. At least, this is a training model which I'm keen to develop.

A Sample of my Work:
Gendlin believes that the body sense forms the substrate for all of our thinking, feeling and decision making. In the last few years, a wealth of neurobiological evidence has supported this view (e.g. Descarte's Error by Antonio Damasio). Damasio shows that it is our sense of ourselves as embodied persons - usually below the threshold of consciousness - that lies behind our capacity to 'place' everything we encounter within a reliable 'web' of meaning. The value of Focusing is that it greatly enhances our conscious access to this capacity, so that our thinking is properly grounded. The body sense is fugitive, subtle and mobile, and needs sustained care and attention to come into awareness. Thinking, on the other hand, is a 'resource-hungry' activity that tends to swamp everything else inside us, and can impose its own patterns in the manner of a dictatorship...
