Dear Focusing Community,

This issue of the newsletter is loosely organized around the theme of felt sense literacy. Felt sense literacy is a way of naming our intent to teach anyone how to access the felt sense level--including those who can't afford to pay to learn, or who are cut off from this opportunity in some other way. We want to make the felt sense level universally available to anyone regardless of their life circumstances. We have just launched a new 'felt sense literacy' section of our website, which includes a letter from Mary Hendricks Gendlin, laying out a vision for felt sense literacy.

Included in this issue is a podcast in which Serge Prengel interviews William Hernandez of Ecuador about the Literacy of the Pause, which is William's approach to felt sense literacy. Some years ago Mary wrote a powerful article about the revolutionary pause. The Literacy of the Pause is a simple way William found to teach the revolutionary pause, so that people from every walk of life could learn it in a very short time.

The Literacy of the Pause is one way to offer felt sense literacy to those who would not otherwise have access to it. In a very different way, Children Focusing also gives this gift. I think what Children Focusing offers is profound, because it allows a person to form the habit of felt sensing at a time of life when habits are only just being formed. We have a front row seat as a child is supported in accessing this level, in René Veugelers' article.

Till next month,
Kye

article "I really need some support!"

How a Focusing approach allows a child's inner voice to emerge.

by René Veugelers

Certifying Coordinator, Focusing Trainer, The Netherlands

quote   As a guide, I am asking myself again and again:
"Is my saying or doing against ...to ...for...about...the child?" This attitude helps us to be near and be with a child"

Introduction

Anyone living close to the energy of a child knows there are profound life skills that adult carers can nurture in children that empower them to grow up, more open to the guidance of their felt senses. As more adults come to understand the advantages this can bring to themselves and the children in their lives, this 'self-empowerment' of children will spread. By supporting each other worldwide, we can help children have the intrinsic motivation and support they need to bring something new into the world.

Here is an illustration of how to guide a child to use their own inner responses, rather than substituting "adult" experience or reactions.

Children Focusing

"I really need some support!" said Rex - with a huge sigh. This came during my third session with a 13 year old boy. So . . . what would you do with such a personal question when you see a boy before you asking for help? His parents are divorced, he has a low opinion of himself and he experiences difficulties with learning.

First, I just mirrored his words, and also his sigh. "There is something in you, that really needs support, and there is even a sigh coming with your words..."

He answered with an even deeper sigh. "Yes!" And I saw that he was touched by this mirroring, so I mirrored this as well. "There is also something touched inside..."

He nodded. Then I suggested that he sense inside, to see if he could notice something about of all this. I saw him checking in, and after around10 to 15 seconds he said

"No, I cannot feel it."

So we sat there . . . each of us being with the other, being with his question of support and noticing nothing yet in his body. This was an important moment in the process. So despite my inner "Oh God ~ what do I do ?", I simply reflected this back to him, that he noticed that there wasn't a bodily reaction yet, and that my intervention may have come too soon.

"Sometimes words, feelings or questions can have colors or movements-and you can invite your attention to check this inside yourself." I paused, and immediately he said: "It's red!" "Yes Red!" I said, using the same energetic tone of this word. "Maybe this Red wants to express itself on a piece of paper. Just invite your hands to make the choice, they know how it feels inside..."

Conversation with William Hernandez

This month's conversation is an invitation to start to explore the pause

by Serge Prengel

quote   You don’t assume you know, you take a moment to let yourself not know, you pause. In so doing (or not doing), you allow your whole self to respond to the situation."

William Hernandez This month's conversation is very different from the others. To tell you how different, I'm going to use the "good news, bad news" format. Starting with the bad news: It's more difficult to follow than other conversations, partly for technical reasons (the recording is not as crisp as most others have been). Partly also because, in order to overcome the language barrier, we had an interpreter translating in each direction.

Now, the good news is that it is really worth it to go through these difficulties to actually listen to the conversation. Because it is about another approach that is both true to the spirit of Focusing, and at the same time boldly opening new horizons. Suffice it to say that Mary & Gene Gendlin have been very excited about the Felt Sense Literacy initiative during the past few years, and involved in its development.

So this is not just a conversation among many. This is the beginning of an ongoing project within the Focusing community.
