kye Note from Catherine

Dear Focusing Community -

I am still basking in the afterglow of two wonderful events: The Third International Conference of Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapies (FOT), and the First International Assembly of Coordinators, held back to back in May at Stony Point Center in New York.  At the FOT conference, I attended the morning sessions led by Shaun and Alexis Phillips on "Facilitating Post-Traumatic Growth and Living Connection," which I found deeply moving and enlightening. Alexis and Shaun showed us how to give full space to the experience of trauma and to know that we and the clients we work with are fundamentally resilient.  Their way makes use of Aboriginal Focusing-Oriented Therapy traditions which connect us to the wisdom of our ancestors and of the earth.  In the wake of trauma, we humans are capable of so much more than mere survival; by encountering our trauma in a gentle, compassionate, land-based and decolonizing way with Focusing, we can truly thrive.

I know from all the feedback that all the other Morning Study groups and other workshops were equally enriching, and in next month's newsletter, we will have a more comprehensive summary.  In the meantime, please look at the bibliography of publications on Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy compiled by Doralee Katonah Grindler.  She and Soti Grafanaki were the tireless, good-humored, extraordinary co-chairs of the conference.

The Coordinators' Assembly which followed the conference was yet another transformative experience.  The Coordinators who gathered were eager to discern the direction of The Focusing Institute during this time of transition. There was much debate and listening, hope and gratitude.  Please read Nada Lou's excellent summary of the meeting below.

The First International Assembly of Co-ordinators

by Nada Lou

The Focusing Institute Coordinators are members of our community who are trained to certify new Focusing Trainers and new Coordinators. We meet every year for a day at the Focusing International Conferences which are organized and held at various geographic locations around the world. There are 195 Coordinators (CC) and Coordinators in Training (CNT) in 33 countries.

There has been a desire for many years for Coordinators to have their own international gathering with more time to meet face to face and discuss issues that are important for our future. This aspiration finally came to reality at Stony Point, NY on May 18 - 21 2014. Forty Focusing Institute Certifying Coordinators (CC's) were present at the "International Assembly of Focusing Institute Coordinators 2014." A member of the transitional Board of Directors was present and so was the Executive Director, Catherine Torpey. The whole group was a real manifestation of multicultural and multilingual membership: 14 from the United States, 12 from Spanish speaking countries (Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain), 5 from Canada , 3 from Germany, 3 from Israel, 2 from Japan, and 1 each from the UK and the Netherlands.

Planning for this Assembly was done by 8 Coordinators, most of whom were present at the Assembly. They very skillfully managed the entire group and interest groups throughout the Assembly. The atmosphere was friendly and eager. Many topics were discussed and several proposals made. A number of interest groups are planning to continue meeting in the future. The proposal to form a Nominating Committee for the new Board of Directors and Leadership Council was discussed and as you are aware, action followed.

It was moving indeed to meet so many CC's face to face, who took the time, money and energy to come to this pivotal meeting. We are planting seeds for the next meeting at the Focusing Institute International in July 2015 in Seattle, Washington.

"Focusing Gems" Phone Seminar
recorded on May 28, 2014 with the Focusing Institute Summer School Teachers.

How would you like to spend one week of your summer vacation at the Focusing Institute Summer School (FISS) learning more about Focusing than you ever thought possible?

Imagine yourself developing an "emotional muscle" to deal with difficult situations that consist of fear, stress and frustration. Imagine yourself becoming your own best friend feeling safe and at home within yourself. By learning Focusing and making it part of your daily living, you dip into the implicit treasures of your body wisdom. Thus, you become a leader who chooses the right next step in challenging times.

garrisonOrdinarily you'd have to travel around the world to study with these five master Focusing teachers... but this week they're going to be all in one place, creating an opportunity for going in depth with Focusing and many of its special applications: to health and healing, to thinking, to dreams, to psychotherapy, to spirituality, and much much more! New to Focusing? You're welcome too! You'll be able to immerse yourself in the company of one teacher and sample all five... make it a time of intensive study or more like a holiday with lots of play and fun... and you'll be in a warm and connected community of Focusing people from all over the world.

The Summer School is appropriate for anyone, at all levels of Focusing, from beginners to Focusing teachers, for both personal and professional development. Bring a friend and get a discount! Fees are based on date that the order is placed and on type of room selection.

If you would like to join us and need to work out a different financial arrangement, such as a monthly payment plan, please contact Elizabeth Cantor: 845-362-5222 or elizabeth@focusing.org
