Dear Focusing Community,

As you can see, we have a new newsletter format! The newsletter will now have one article each time; will let you know about upcoming events; and will tell you about new resources on our website. Instead of receiving the newsletter three times a year, you'll receive it monthly.

We've moved away from a single PDF file with the whole newsletter in it. Instead, we are placing articles directly on the website, in the section for that topic. This way, when you click 'keep reading', you will get to keep reading other articles on that topic as well, if you choose.

Dionis Griffin has stepped down as our editor after many years. We will miss her, and we deeply appreciate her contribution. It was an enormous job to take on as a volunteer, and not an easy one. Dionis, thank you!

I also want to express my ever growing appreciation for Bill Silverman, our webmaster. He created the template for the newsletter in addition to everything else he does for us. We are still looking for a volunteer to help him. If you know how to work with HTML and would like to help out, we would be very grateful. This is one of our most critical needs right now. If you couldn't help, yourself, but know someone who might, please let them know we're looking.

The next several issues of the newsletter will be loosely tied together by the common theme of connecting to the 'other', sometimes across cultures, in a diverse world. The first article in the series is by Kevin McEvenue. Enjoy.

Warmly,
Kye

articleWholebody Focusing -
Being in Grounded Presence

by Kevin McEvenue

Certifying Coordinator, Focusing Trainer, Toronto, Canada

When I have a strong sense of 'me here', I can make room for you there and be in relationship with you in a different way than I am used to."

The invitation to write this article is a good instance of how it is for me to be in grounded presence. I don't know why, but when I read the invitation, my body awakened instantly. I felt alive and present in my core. I had a feeling that the person doing the inviting was coming from a sense of her core and maybe this is why I was having this experience of myself so immediately.

My experience in me felt three dimensional. It felt spacious, there was a sense of more me and at the same time I felt seen and heard in a way that gave me the feeling that the person (whom I have never met) knew something about what it was she was inviting and I could relate to that. I was flooded with information about the subject and I knew that I wanted to respond and how to.

However, there was one part of the request that caused me to 'think'.  I was asked to include stories to illustrate how a person can be strongly with themselves and with difference when in grounded presence. I felt stuck.  I tried to think of instances of grounded presence in myself and others and nothing came. I felt the disconnect, and so I came back to that sense of myself that I felt the moment before.

Suddenly a whole new experience of myself happened and I was flooded with more information as my core presence intensified and words came, "This is what it is to be in grounded presence. It is an experience of self beyond words!"

Snapshots from the Winter Retreat

by Sara Snyder

Twenty-four Focusers gathered from February 9 to 16 at a beautiful, sacred site below an ancient volcanic crater on the Pacific shore in Chacala, Mexico. Our retreat center was tucked into a golden crescent beach adorned with black lava rocks the size of dinosaur eggs.

None of us had ever been to the Mar de Jade retreat center, and none was disappointed. Practically every room looked out on the ocean - in fact, sometimes we had to close the doors because the waves were so loud! The unfailingly friendly staff provided three delicious buffet meals a day with organic vegetables from their own farm, and something to meet absolutely every dietary need.

The first two days we were there, a group of whales put on a lunchtime show off the outdoor dining patio.

FISS 2013: 8th Annual Focusing Institute Summer School

August 16-22, 2013 at Garrison Institute in Garrison, New York

 Beginners Welcome!

How would you like to spend one week of your summer vacation at the Focusing Institute Summer School (FISS) learning more about Focusing than you ever thought possible?

Imagine yourself developing an "emotional muscle" to deal with difficult situations that consist of fear, stress and frustration. Imagine yourself becoming your own best friend feeling safe and at home within yourself. By learning Focusing and making it part of your daily living, you dip into the implicit treasures of your body wisdom. Thus, you become a leader who chooses the right next step in challenging times.

Ordinarily you'd have to travel around the world to study with these five master Focusing teachers... but this week they're going to be all in one place, creating an opportunity for going in depth with Focusing and many of its special applications: to health and healing, to thinking, to dreams, to psychotherapy, to spirituality, and much much more! New to Focusing? You're welcome too! You'll be able to immerse yourself in the company of one teacher and sample all five... make it a time of intensive study or more like a holiday with lots of play and fun... and you'll be in a warm and connected community of Focusing people from all over the world.

The Summer School is appropriate for anyone, at all levels of Focusing, from beginners to Focusing teachers, for both personal and professional development. Bring a friend and get a discount! Fees are based on date that the order is placed and on type of room selection.

If you would like to join us and need to work out a different financial arrangement, e.g a monthly payment plan, please contact Elizabeth Cantor: 845-362-5222 or elizabeth@focusing.org
