Clearing A Space in Judo Class

by Jack Krystek, Ph.D., Trainer, USA

I have the students (ages 3-6 years) line up to formally bow in the class before the class starts. I tell the students to take a deep breath and to see if there is something in their bodies they don't like. If they have something in their bodies they don't like --a sad feeling, an angry feeling, a nervous feeling, a hurt feeling--, I tell them to take it out of their bodies and put them somewhere. The kids respond with things like " I threw it to the moon." and "I put it outside the window." They can each have an opportunity to verbalize where they put "it". One day I did not include the opening exercise and a four year old said,"Sensei, Sensei, (teacher in Japanese), you forgot. I have something in my body and I want to throw it out. With that he ran off the mat and he said, "I put it on the chair."
