Exploring the Use of Touch in Focusing

Exploring the Use of Touch in Focusing

CONNECTION>CONVERSATION>COMMUNITY

The TIFI Membership Committee is pleased to introduce this new series of Focusing Roundtables especially for members of the Institute.  We hope that this program and those to come will afford members a valuable opportunity to engage in casual peer-to-peer conversation with other members who share Focusing-related interests.

Who should attend? Anyone with curiosity about this topic, as well as bodyworkers and other healthcare professionals, body-based therapists, people with chronic pain - and anyone who is interested in deepening their own Focusing through integrating touch. Touch is especially helpful in self-Focusing. We include somatic awareness and proprioception exercises as part of this introduction.

What to expect: Each Focusing Roundtable is designed to promote informal peer-to-peer conversation.  Rather than acting as expert presenters, the Hosts will serve as conversation moderators to encourage sharing and exploration of the topics from the participants’ own perspectives.  All participants’ sharings are welcome and valuable, no matter what level of experience or knowledge you have on the topic. To preserve the nature of informal conversation, the program will be offered live only and no recordings will be available.  Registration is limited to 20 members on a first-come, first served basis. Participants are encouraged to create follow up opportunities for connection among themselves after the Roundtable.

In this roundtable, we begin with a guided exercise experiencing your own touch on yourself and sensing from the inside what you notice. Hosts and participants then share our experiences with the exercise, as well as experiences and insights we may have had if we’ve already used touch in Focusing alone, with partners, with clients. Among the questions we might explore together are…

  • What does using touch with Focusing actually look like?
  • What are the benefits of including touch in your Focusing sessions?
  • What are the benefits of using Focusing in your body-centered therapy sessions?
  • As Companion, have you experienced a felt shift happen in the Focuser’s body?
  • Have you ever experienced times where it was NOT a good idea to use touch in Focusing?
  • Have you had experiences using touch in Focusing with chronic pain?
  • How can we differentiate the use of touch to evoke an emotional response from the use of touch to evoke a felt shift?
  • What about trauma? How does touch + Focusing affect someone who is suffering from trauma?

We have also written a brief article that you will receive with your confirmation letter a few days before the Roundtable to help “prime the pump” and stimulate ideas and possibilities among participants - particularly for those of you who may not have already had a lot of experience with integrating Focusing with touch. (Please note that this is entirely optional reading.)

If these or related questions intrigue you, we hope you will join us for this Roundtable. We look forward to sharing your experiences, questions and curiosity!

Registration Closes: Wednesday, March 22, 2017 or when the 20-person participant capacity has been reached, whichever is sooner.

Zoom: This conversation will take place on an online video conference service called Zoom. Please attend by computer so that we can have your video presence as well as your audio. Calling in by phone is also possible but not preferred.

Price: The host and co-hosts are volunteering their time in order that this program may be brought to members of TIFI at no charge.

PLEASE NOTE:  When you register here, you will be asked to confirm that you are a member.  If you are not a member, you may click on the option to receive information about how to become a member.  After membership is confirmed and you have registered here, watch for an email containing a link to take you to the conference room at the start time.  You will simply click on the link or paste it into your browser to enter the conference.
