Two Year Focusing On-line Interactive Certification Program

With Charlotte Howorth, LCSW, and International Guest Teachers


Start Date: Friday, February 9th, 2018
(Please note: this program may be switched to a start date of Sunday, February 11th, 2018 if we find more participants can make Sunday but cannot arrange their schedules for Friday)

Time: 10 am - 1:30 pm Eastern Time

End Date: Approximately February, 2020

Format:
Workshops will be conducted using a live video link where students and teacher will be able to see and interact with each other. Each group will be no larger than 12 students.
The video link will be an easy to use format called Zoom. You will need to have a computer/mobile device with a camera. Calling in without video is possible but not preferred. Charlotte will send Zoom instructions (simple) in advance of the course.

Who is eligible to take this course?

  • Therapists, Counsellors, Health Care Workers, Professionals of any field interested in incorporating Focusing into your professional work.
  • Individuals interested in deeply learning Focusing for self-study.
  • Individuals who want to train others in Focusing.

PROGRAM DESIGN:

YEAR ONE:
One 1-hour INDIVIDUAL session with Charlotte before students start the course.
Ten 3 1/2-hour classes with teachers (approximately monthly)
Ten 2-hour online meetings in smaller groups of approximately 4 students. Here students will do experiential exercises, watch assigned videos, and discuss readings. Note: In three of the ten sessions you be joined by a coach to help facilitate your practice.

YEAR TWO:

Ten 3 -hour classes with teachers (approximately monthly)
Four practice sessions with Focusing-Oriented Therapist (FOT) Charlotte over two weekends.
Ten 2-hour online meetings in smaller groups of approximately 4 students. Here students will do experiential exercises, watch assigned videos, and discuss readings. Note: In three of the ten sessions you be joined by a coach to help facilitate your practice.
Six sessions with an FOT supervisor to be paid for in addition to course fees (we have a list of experienced supervisors who work on a sliding scale).

Additional requirements over the course period:

Students will maintain a weekly Focusing Partnership during training. Partners will be rotated approximately every three months.

Assignments:
1) Video-taped session with a client.
2) Teach focusing to two or more students over 3 or more sessions and write it up.
3) Various readings, videos, audio between classes (when assigned, approximately 1-2 hours per month).
4) Weekly partnership Focusing in dyads (1-hour per week).

There will be opportunities for experiential supervision of work with clients, live demonstrations, and opportunities to practice with both teachers and together in class.

Attendance:
All training and supervision sessions are required.

One excused absence per year is permitted as long as the recorded video and assignments are completed. In the case of a second absence, there is a required make-up session with the Program Coordinator Charlotte Howorth at an additional fee.

One excused absence per year is permitted of the small group 2-hour online meetings.

Course completion and Certification:
Completion of the requirements does not automatically lead to certification. Charlotte Howorth and the Trainee must agree on readiness.

Upon recommendation for certification, the student is required to pay a one-time certification fee. The International Focusing Institute has a three-tiered pricing scale for certification and membership fees. Certification Fees: US $500, Europe $375, South America (and developing countries) $250.

Attendance at the annual Advanced Certification Program is encouraged (but not required) and tuition to the Weeklong includes the above-referenced certification fee. If students are unable to attend the Weeklong, the certification fee may be applied to the Weeklong tuition for up to two years following certification.

Level 1 and Level 2 Introductory classes or equivalent experience. Please contact Elizabeth@focusing.org with any questions.

Program Coordinator and Instructor:

Charlotte Howorth, LCSW (www.howortherapy.com)

  • Teaches and supervises psychotherapists in how to use Focusing in their practice internationally.
  • Is on the faculty of The Relational Focusing Oriented Psychotherapy program headed by Lynn Preston in New York City, where she teaches and supervises psychotherapists taking the program.
  • Has over 20 years experience, teaching, counseling, supervising, and writing.
  • Lecturer in Social Work, Columbia University, NY.
  • Clinical Consultant, CHDFS (Center for Human Development and Family Services).
  • Private Practice for adults, children, couples, and families in NY.

Guest Teachers: Greg Madison, PhD, Akira Ikemi, PhD, Lynn Preston, MA, MS, Ann Weiser Cornell, PhD, Bala Jaison, PhD, Shaun Phillips, RCC, SFTT, Jim Iberg, PhD, Joan Klagsbrun, PhD, Jim Strohl, PhD (The Internatonal Focusing Institute reserves the right to make changes and additions to the guest teacher roster.)

FEES:


Total Fees for 2 year program
  • $4,940 total + annual membership dues as Trainee $75 (US) $55 (Europe) or $35 (South America and developing countries)  

Year 1

  • $2090 for 11 teaching sessions. Payment plans are available. Examples: monthly payments, twice a month etc. Note: Payment for the next training day must be paid in advance of the session date. There is currently no additional fee for payment plans.

Year 2

  • $2850 for 13 teaching and practice sessions + annual membership dues as Trainee  $75 (US) $55 (Europe) or $35 (South America and developing countries)  There are 6 supervision sessions with a certified FOT therapist which are an additional cost. You will be provided with a list of experienced therapists who work on a sliding scale).

Make-up session

  • $200 directly to Instructor.

Certification

  • US $500, Europe $375, South America (and developing countries) $250.

Please register promptly -- we anticipate full enrollment.

COMPLETION and CERTIFICATION:

Upon satisfactory completion of the program as defined by the Instructor, a participant may request recommendation for certification. Candidates for certification are encouraged to attend The Advanced and Certification Weeklong, an advanced 6-day program offered annually to celebrate, honor and welcome newly Certified Focusing Professionals into the Focusing community while giving them an opportunity to gain advanced skills. If a candidate does not attend the Certification Weeklong, a stand-alone certification fee may be paid.

THE SMALL PRINT

Refund policy: A full refund minus a $50 administrative fee will be given for cancellations received 60 days prior to the start of the program. Cancellation requests received fewer than 60 days prior to the program are handled on a case-by-case basis. The International Focusing Institute reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule for insufficient enrollment or for other unanticipated reasons. In such cases you will be given a choice of applying your tuition to future programs, or having the full enrollment fee returned to you.
