Focused Self-Care for Caregivers
The TIFI Membership Committee is pleased to offer this series of Focusing Roundtables designed especially for members of the Institute. We hope that this program and those to come will afford members a valuable opportunity to engage in casual peer-to-peer conversation with other members who share Focusing-related interests.

This Roundtable will be of particular interest to members who have found themselves serving in the role of caregiver, whether for a child, spouse/partner, parent or friend--sometimes in multiple, simultaneous roles. Especially in today's society, with ever-increasing numbers of individuals requiring care, the nurturing, feel-good rewards of care giving are frequently negated by increased levels of exhaustion and mismanaged stress.
Lacking the restorative power of adequate self-care, harried caregivers can often resort to grasping for some semblance of control over their own lives--which then results in disempowering those for whom they offer care. Instead, might it be possible to integrate Focusing into the care giving process in such a way that both caregiver and care-recipient might reap its benefits?
During this Roundtable, our goal will be to create a spacious time together to freshly invite the following types of explorations:
- What is it you LOVE most about caregiving?
- What is it that FRUSTRATES you most about caregiving?
- What is your current "learning edge" related to caregiving?
Our hope is that individual participants will experience validation, comfort, solace, and perhaps even inspiration as we share our own aliveness with this issue. Who knows, someone's "love" or "frustration" may be another's "learning edge".
What to expect: Each Focusing Roundtable is designed to promote informal peer-to-peer conversation. Rather than acting as expert presenters, the Hosts will serve as conversation moderators to encourage sharing and exploration of the topics from the participants’ own perspectives. All participants’ sharings are welcome and valuable, no matter what level of experience or knowledge you have on the topic. To preserve the nature of informal conversation, the program will be offered live only and no recordings will be available. Registration is limited. Participants are encouraged to create follow up opportunities for connection among themselves after the Roundtable.
Mary Elaine Kiener creatively blends her Focusing teaching and practice with decades of nursing and holistic health expertise, whimsically describing herself as a "transformational midwife". Her current learning edge involves nurturing the development of learning and healing environments that are "safe" enough to enable participants to become "brave".
Bruce Gibbs, Ph.D. is a longtime Focusing person. He has offered himself as a caregiver numerous times in his life. While no expert, or even close, his interest and curiosity bring him to this Roundtable.
